about this album:
Australia the lucky country! What other government would send a lunatic artist known for smashing amplified glass against his face off to China to become a cultural ambassador? Well it happened to Lucas Abela (Justice Yeldham) and this album, Mrs Rice is the result. With under two months in Beijing he formed the pick up band Rice屎Corpse, (named after the Chinese character for shit, 屎 which itself is the combination of two characters “尸” corpse and “米” rice), jammed with them four times (two off which were recorded for this album) before heading off for a ten city tour of China.

A Trio of glass, drums and piano was in Lucas’s minds ear when he arrived and two completely different musicians came forward to form this unlikely band. First to be recruited for drums was Yang Yang whose antics in his own band Mafeisan has given him the reputation of being the craziest exponent of the conservative Beijing scene. His ultra loud out and proud personality is in stark contrast to the mild mannered and brutally shy saxophonist Li Zenghui who came to the project as pianist, cause simply put there were no suitable pianists in the city.

Existing for a limited time and without a common language to interrupt they managed to create these six varied and strangely focused improvisations. This despondent attempt at musicality is by far Abela’s most accessible work to date as the addition of Yang and Li’s rhythm section forced the seasoned glass man to take the instrument in surprising new directions.

Sub Jam /KwanYin Records invited 10 past and present colleagues to make package for this special join-release individually.
Their identities are ambiguous: owner of music shop, graphic designer, music critic, DIY designer, curator, artist assistant, unemployed…
The only consistency is they are together here with the lable,
labour for music they love. Therefore this is a gentle meeting of staff behind the scenes as well.

06，°OP_Bitschshift同样来自柏林。

（Tombe en Combat!）

Norwegian original (accapella) version

M: Halloen
B: Hallo er det hos Kjelstrup?
M: Mjaaa
B: *sound of paper*
M: *sounds*
B: Men, ehh.
M: *screaming*
B: … med sånne miljøer
M: *continues screaming*
B: hallo? med sånne miljøer?
M; *sounds and screaming*
B: Hallo!
M: Halja! *sounds and screaming*
B: *Breathing heavy and hanging up the phone*

Sub Jam /KwanYin Records invited 10 past and present colleagues to make package for this special join-release individually. Their identities are ambiguous: owner of music shop, graphic designer, music critic, DIY designer, curator, artist assistant, unemployed… The only consistency is they are together here with the lable, labour for music they love. Therefore this is a gentle meeting of staff behind the scenes as well.

Introduction of artists:

01 Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje is one of Norways most famous classical contemporary composers, whos work has been peroformed and given awards around the world. She is also a member of the noise band Fe-mail, the impro band SPUNK, a solo vocal impro artist, a vocalist with jazz bands, has worked with black metallers, sung in a country band and remixed and sung with pop bands.

Maskinanlegg is the trash industry/noise project of Bjørn Hatterud. He has made a ton of CDr releases on more or less obscure labels all over the world. He sees Maskinanlegg as a art project more than a music project, with the aim of having fun with traditional borders between high art and popular culture, exploring esthetic similarity between outsider muic, lowbrow pop and avant garde extremes.

02 Helene Rickhard is the daughter of a celebrated Norwegian artist, making her used to having queen Sonja of Norway as a visitor when she was a child. Helene is member for the Mikrodiscomovement, with lot’s of young musicians making music with Nintendo machines and other low-fi digital equipment. Her remixed version of the song also has a music video made to it, try to find it at youtube…

03 PK 101 is Per Kristian Nordnes, who is also a part of the Mikrodiscomovement. Originally desending from the far north of Norway, he grew up with light nights in the summertime, and dark day in the winter. Per Kristian has made lot’s of music as a solo artitst. When he made his mix he had been living more or less isolated for years in a old house in the countryside outside of Bergen, Norway. His mix is entirely made of samples from the original a cappella version.

04 Center of the Universe is one of the many projects of Jørgen Sissyfus Skjulstad. Beening the master mind behind Norways most famous CDr record label Metronomicon Records, which has released some of the most critically acclaimed albums of Norwegian underground pop the last ten years. Skjulstad is also a multiinstrumentalist, a good musician with a love for obscure songs and strange rythms, making Center of the Universe well known for a crazy mix of exotic tunes from eastern europe, indie pop and club music.

05 Evol is a one man project from Berlin, Germany, exploring the dark landscapes between dub, club and inustry. He made this dark dub mix in a period of grief over his fathers death. Beening a favorite of DJ Hell Evol was represented on International Deejay’s CD number ten.

06 °OP_Bitchshift is a also based in Berlin, Germany. The band is the project of Bend McPherson, releasing LPs and CDs about fucking girls (most of the trax at least), to hard electro rythms. A noteable act on the incredible hip Berlin scene.

07 Daniel Jerome’s real name is Daniel Andersen, he comes from a town in the extremely religious south-western part of Norway.. He has taken the name Daniel Jerome from one of the members of the german cult group the Kelly Family. Daniel loves putting on make-up, performing songs about his lost boy-friends, and other essential parts of gay life, to self made music. In his remix he has put in some lyrics in the Norwegian dialect Trødersk, the dialect from the area where Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje comes from. In the song he pretends to be Solveig Kjelstrup.

08 Barabass is member of the band Barabass & the Happy Few, from Bergen, Norway. Normally making extremely happy rock music, as a solo artist Barabass here has found his scissors and cut the a cappella version into small pieces, making them dance around a ground beat. Barabas was the bad guy people wanted to survive instead of Jesus Christ. I don’t know why the artist has chosen such a name.

09 Nekro-XP is one of the rising stars in Norwegian Noise Culture. Making minimal and repitative noise, but with samples of concrete material as voices etc. his sound is industrial, dark, gothic and politically incorrect. Nekro means death. What the X & P means I really don’t know…

10 Tombe en Combat! is a band from Oslo, Norway. They are two impro artists called Øystein and Øistein (sic!!!) with one microphone. They have no track on time when they start playing, so the original version of this mix was more than 20 minutes long. It was cut down partly by putting different parts of the mix in different speakers. Tombe en Combat! wasn’t asked if that was OK, so don’t tell them about it!

11 Torstein Wjiik is the alter ego of Kjetil Hansen. He is a noise musician who is also one of the youngest record company leaders in Norway, running the company “Ambolthue”. He is hyper active, in periodes releasing many releases with himself and other artists (mostly other artists) every week. His speciality is a combining of absurd humor and harsh, extreme noise, and although he just turned 20 has made visible marks in noise culture in Norway.

12 Ncht is Tania Steine who is a Norwegian artist, working with everything from foto and video to paintings and installations. She also made the style and genre grounding covers of Norwegian black metal bands like Darkthrone, Thorns, Satyricon, Burzum, Emperor during the early years of Norwegian black metal (the years of murders and church burning). One of her projects the last years have been “Ravn” (Norwegian for raven) together with, to name one, Lasse Marhaug. You can clearly hear her inspiration from shamanism and Norwegian nature….

13 Iversen is short for Jan Morten Iversen. He runs TIB-prod (who also releases this remix album), a very good label that has realeased more than 100 albums with good, mainly Norwegian, noise. He lives in Hafrsfjord, near Stavanger, a city made rich on Norwegian oil. (Norway is the second largest producer of oil in the world, and much of it runs through Stavanger in one way or another.) Hafrsfjord is also famous for beeing a place of wars between vikings. No wander Iversen is into harsh noise.

14 Pål Asle Pettersen is also from Stavanger, where he has been part of different bands. He has also made solo releases of electronic experimental music. He also is a concert promoter for concerts with experimental noise, electronica, impro and contemporary classical music in Stavanger. And the sounds of these different genres are easily heard in the remix.

Lasse Marhaug is the guru of Norwegian Noise Music. Making noise since his early teens (then with a tape recorder and AC/DC tapes). He is now a professional working only with noise. He is the first member of the Norwegian Classical Composers Union that doesn’t know how to read or write music. He has released a couple of hundred albums, and has worked with black metallers, classical composer, jazz and impro artists. And is a popular act on Norwegian rock festivals.

Text by Bjørn Hatterud

Original version in English:
B:Hello, do I speak with Kjelstrup?
M: Mjaa
B: It is Bjørn Hatterud calling, ehh calling you because you a famous ehhh…. famous composer, composer of contemporary classical music, famous Norwegian composer of contemporary classical music. ehh.. I’ve got a few questiones for you, do you have time to answer? OK
M: *sound*
B: OK, one moment and I’ll find the questions
B: *sound of paper*
B: Well, how is it sort of to live like a classical contemporary composer in Norway, or classical contemporary musician?
M: *sounds*
B: Yes, OK but so ehh… the thing that strikes me is that there is such a criticism internationally against the composers that actually succeed in getting a break through amongst the people, like Phillip Glass and such often are seen as almost evil
M: *sounds*
B: Ok yes, yes I see, ehhh well, there is this, to put it, various alternative underground scenes and such, what kind of contact do you as a composer have with them, assa? Ehh…
M: *sounds*
B: OK but, there is a famous Norwegian composer called Maja Ratkje, who also is famous for having some contact…
M: *screaming*
B: … with such circles
M: *continues screaming*
B: hello? with such circles?
M: *Sounds and screaming*
B: Hallo!
M: Halja! *sounds and screaming*
B: *Breathing heavy and hanging up the phone*

PRESS RELEASE:
Ya Ji (Elegant Meeting)

A truly International sound project between China, Sweden and Australia. Proving that experimental music is very much acultural. The artists involved are Bai Tian from and currently lives in Chengdu (Sichuan province) and Shizi from Lanzhou (now lives in Beijing) in China , Anders Peterson from Stockholm and The Loop Orchestra from Sydney. The Artists have remixed each other’s work and these remixes are joined together to make up the 16 minute collaborative first track. Sound files were exchanged through the Internet. So it is a real cross-cultural/international sound project and in that respect it is unique. The other tracks on the CD are pieces by each of the artists.

The CD is released on the Chinese label KwanYin Records which is under the Sub Jam (www.subjam.org) collective from Beijing . All of the Artwork, CD production and final mastering was done in China.

The music ranges from the sound journey of the first collaborative track , Ya Ji, through to the beautiful final slowly unfolding piece by Shizi . The 16 minute collaboration is in four separate chapters. The first is a collaboration between Bai Tian and Anders Peterson. The second is a remix by The Loop Orchestra of the collaboration. The Loop Orchestra remix is then remixed by Shizi. The piece is really like a sound journey from minimal beats which become buried by dronal loops and finally slowly collapsing into the abyss.

The second track , In , by Bai Tian is a bright crisp digital electronic piece which references the heyday of European digital electronica of the late 90s.
Track three, insomniactivity is by relapxych.0 (Anders Peterson from Stockholm, Sweden). It is a marriage of instrumentation and electronica.

The next piece (track four), Vibraloops, by The Loop Orchestra is a colourful and humourous tape-loop rendition of a 1940s/50s vibraphone orchestra. Full of kitsch and colour it is beautifully percussive and opposite to the previous piece is very much low technology or as they like to say a category called No Tech. Purely tape loops played on reel-to-reel tape machines.

Track five, Background Shadows is a radio studio remix of the CD Her Face Amongst the Shadows by Objekt4 (the previous sound project of Anders Peterson). The remix is by John Blades and Richard Fielding who co-present the experimental radio program Background Noise on 2 mbs FM in Sydney. For this they used the radio studio as an instrument. Listen at www.anonradio.net .

The final track, track six is by Shizi and is a layered drone piece which is like being consumed by a thick fog. A very appropriate closing to the elegant meeting.

The whole CD can really be described as a sound journey with a beginning, a middle and an end.

THE ARTISTS:
Anders Peterson (relapxych.0)
After working for many years with sound design, film music, sound recording, mastering / remastering, acoustic design and also as a musician (guitars / bass) I eventually found the most rewarding personal experience from the sounds of nature (water, wind, fire, earth), with its endless variation and amazing organic qualities, constantly evolving, and by capturing (recording) ambience from certain places I finally obtained sounds that had massive potential to be truly *original* and *unique* to myself. The next step was to combine these recordings with musical instruments and “approaches”, combining harmonics and “body” from musical instruments with the organic flow and constantly varying rhythms of for example dripping water, gusts of wind or cracking ice, through digitally coded cross-synthesis, hybrid sounds carefully sculptured by hand. Creating musical ambience instead of ambient music.
www.ghostsounds.net

Bai Tian (aka Bai+ian) is a emerging sound artist, flute player and organizer of independent music based in Chengdu, China. He plays in a wide range of styles such as ambient, cut’n'paste and electronic music etc. He has performed with Chinese and international artists such as Huan Qing, Zafka, Zbignew Karkowski and Li Chin Sung. He has participated in exhibitions such as 156M Contemporary Art Exhibition (Chengdu), Getitlouder (Chengdu) and China Power Station (London).
www.myspace.com/baiii

Shizi was born in Lanzhou, China in 1984. He is a drummer, and improvised music player. As member of “Noise Association of Lanzhou” he started his underground music career in the late 1990′s. He has worked with more than 10 bands/projects with different styles. Once he moved to Beijing for university in 2003, he started to work in the palm of electronic/experimental and improv music. Now he is studying sound design at Beijing Film Academy.
www.myspace.com/shiziofnoise

The Loop Orchestra was formed in 1982 by Richard Fielding and John Blades. It is a collective of reel-to-reel tape machines which are approximately 30 to 35 years old. The reel-to-reel tape machines play lengths of quarter inch tape joined into loops of varying size onto which sound is recorded from various sources. This methodology is historically significant in the history of electronic music from the 1950s. The loops are mixed together to create a layered and slowly evolving soundscape. They have had CD and record releases in Australia and Europe since their first release (the LP record Suspense) in 1991. There are currently five members: John Blades, Richard Fielding, Manny Gasparinatos, Hamish Mackenzie and Juke Wyatt. The Members for this recording were John Blades, Richard Fielding, Manny Gasparinatos and Patrick Gibson. For information and a full list of performances and releases visit

review:

Like Brian Eno´s ground-breaking but seldom-used “Music for Airports”, this two CD set was designed for play not only in a specific site – the museum – but in specific rooms in that structure – the lobby, gallery, bookshop, cafe, and even the bathroom. The printed instructions (again echoing Eno) make clear that the music should be played low, below the level of normal conversation, and that the CD player ought to be set on shuffle mode to include the “necessary” 4´33″ of silence appended as the closing track on each disc. This has to do with some kind of fuzzy conceptual tie-in with John Cage and his plans to sell “silence” to the Muzak Corporation.
Each track is about a quarter of an hour long. On the first disc, Yan Jun guides you through the tree lined walkway and into the lobby, which all sounds very much like wending your way through a gigantic wind chime ringing at random intervals. Coats hung up and guide books at the ready, we enter the main gallery where Isan provide an appropriately unobtrusive soundtrack that rises and judders at times, eventually becoming rather intrusive – but eminently listenable. The always delicious 718 create an exquisitly frothy backdrop to – the bathroom. Isambard Khroustaliov provides the final soundtrack, this one for the bookstore. Its tiny, telegraphic sounds sound like the neurons of the brain firing as interested customers peruse the content of the volumes on sale.
Disc two begins with Zafka, aka Zhang Anding, whose more freak-outable side playing with his improv collective The Wedding Beast can be heard on the challenging Kwan Yin collection “Noise is Free: Mini Midi 2008″. Zafka´s piece is so busily narrative compared to the others that it hits you like a blast of technocolour panavision at a black-and-white silent movie festival. But then again he has been given the task of soundtracking the cafeteria. Two more tracks by 718 bubble out of the deep blue sea, breach the surface and take to the air in a more customary ambient fashion.
A high concept album which surely would enhance the ambience of any exhibition space, while doubling for peaceful enjoyment at home.
718 and Zafka also appear on “Music for Shopping Malls”, but despite their exquisite efforts, I wonder if it is not Yan Jun whose inaptly named “4th Ring Shopping Killer” is not the sweetest piece of the seventy-odd minutes within. Concludes with four several short, idiosyncratic loops intended for repeat, extended play. Would that retailers would take the authors´ implicit advice and use them to replace the usual gloppy Muzak in our boutiques and shopping centres.
