Founded in 2007, Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong (CMHK) is devoted to the promotion and production of contemporary sonic and musical practices in Hong Kong. CMHK’s vision is twofold: (1) to create a forward-looking support structure for contemporary sonic and musical practices; and (2) to expand the reach of contemporary music and experimental sound. CMHK believes in contemporary music and experimental sound as relevant performing art forms, and sees the desperate need for a forward-looking platform for musical experiments in Hong Kong.
Sonic Transmission is an artist exchange program initiated by CMHK, with the goal of exposing the works of the best of Hong Kong’s sound artists to the wider Chinese sound art community. In collaboration with organizations that share our commitment to further the discourse of sound, we feature our city’s artists in solo performances outside of Hong Kong. Between September 2012 and June 2013, CMHK presented a total of 5 Hong Kong artists at the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai. In the 2015, in collaboration with new overseas partnering organizations, we have established a two-tier exchange framework. Two “exchange artists” had been chosen to represent Hong Kong in Taipei, Shanghai and Beijing via our overseas partner organizations. Additionally, four other individuals (as two separate groups) had been named our “supported artists” for whom we will proactively seek funding to support one or more of their outbound performance trips.Artists were chosen through an open call recruitment process.
Two exchange artists had been selected to represent Hong Kong in Taipei, Shanghai, and Beijing. CMHK will produce their overseas performances in collaboration with our overseas partner organizations. CMHK will also support their travel to and accommodation in the host cities. CMHK’s 2015 exchange artists are percussionist-improviser Louis Siu, and emerging electronic musician and sound artist Jasper Fung.
