缘起
A

Mattin

Origin
A
From many perspectives to observe Mattin: a unique figure of contemporary music. Or: he is a wired guy.
He has made many people pissed off. Including audiences, musicians and organizers. And he gained paise at same time.
Compares to his title “Concept Musician”, Mattin keeps an intensive performative. He throw himself into the event and triggle all sounds, objects and people to be part ot it. Once the show over, everything turn back as usual. He refuses to be author of a performance. Rather, he devotes himself to the event. To be the first who lost in this specific time-space. In a world where everything was explained and named, Mattin is a small unknown.
His performances always different. It brings surprise. And always be keen.
He has edited a book titled “Noise and Capitalism”. It’s free.
He once put a slogan on his website: Destroy Yourself!
Since more than 10 years ago he has been ivolved to the most radical part of new improvised music scene: those concerts barely could be heard. Those “Computer Music” which were sound of cleaning laptop screen with paper. Those questions to audiences without need of answering. Those actions of covering audiences’ eyes during a concert…
And those deadly loud noise.
And highly post-producted albums. They challenge the understanding of music. For instance, a CD contains 3 live recordings recorded by different mics on different possitions for same concert.
In western, some people use the word “Zen” to define a piece of art they don’t want to experinece. In China, people use the word “Performing Art” to treat similar situation (with a bit derogatory sense). Mattin considers that same phenomenon excist in experimental music scene as well. So called Improvistaion and Free also face danger of being defined and modeled. His creating is a war to this situation. Because he doesn’t allow people to keep distance. His audience has no chance to explain or run away. On his own words: to against objective.
In a sense, he is a terrorist.

B
Mattin has a label for release music created with free software. He has released German musician Olaf Hochherz and Tim Blechmann’s works. Sub Jam also has released their works. And now we are releasing their new works. Good to link the release party with this concert.
Another new release of Sub Jam is “Untitled” by Lao Yang, the founder of Sugar Jar. A conceptual CD. Not for sale.
We had plan to bring Mattin to China but it doesn’t happened. The opportunity comes as he’s going to Taiwan to work with artist Hong-Kai Wang. Thanx for the chance.
This is first time Sub Jam organize concert at Zajia Lab. Performers will design their performances according to specifics of the site.

Mattin
Mattin is a Basque artist working with noise and improvisation. His work seeks to address the social and economic structures of experimental music production through live performance, recordings and writing.
Using a conceptual approach, he aims to question the nature and parameters of improvisation, specifically the relationship between the idea of ”freedom”and constant innovation that it traditionally implies, and the established conventions of improvisation as a genre.
Mattin considers improvisation not only as an interaction between musicians and instruments, but as a situation involving all the elements that constitute a concert, including the audience and the social and architectural space. He tries to expose the stereotypical relation between active performer and passive audience, producing a sense of strangeness and alienation that disturbs this relationship.

Yan Jun
Improvised music, writing, field recording, feedback, noise hypnotizing, living room tour…
Mainly he use feedback noise as materials of his improvisation. Which are some times very quiet and some times very loud. It depends on the space, audience, sound system and other factors. Sometimes he plays at audience’s home. He’s open to “what is music”. Some times his performance is unconventional.
